Assuring quality in higher education during the COVID-19 crisis

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation/ International Quality Group (CHEA/CIQG) organized on the 6th of May 2020 Webinar on an important topic of assuring quality in higher education during the COVID-19 crisis.

The webinar explored two main questions:
– What are the key elements for successful online teaching and learning as the number of online students are growing exponentially around the world?
– What is the role of quality assurance bodies in addressing quality, working with institutions?

During this webinar the panelists gave their take on these two main questions and it was clear that universities who had to change from face to face learning to distance learning due to COVID – 19 are facing great challenges. These challenges lay within having to educate the staff, create and adjust the infrastructure (learning platform) and assuring the quality of the study. A clear reform must be implemented within the HE and also the QA agencies who have to assess these universities.

As an QA agency it has not been possible to perform onsite visits. Our agency decided to implement online site visits. We know that there are a few things to be considered like, readiness of institution, readiness of panelist / auditors, readiness of QA body and integrity and trust.
